Kilitbahir Castle

Kilitbahir Castle  is a fortress on the west side of the Dardanelles, opposite the city of Çanakkale, where there is a corresponding fortress , from which Çanakkale takes its name. The two castles were constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1463 to control the straits at their narrowest point. Kilitbahir's name, meaning "lock of the sea", reflects this defensive purpose.

It was restored in 1551 during the Kanuni period and after that it was restored by Abdülaziz the Sultan and cannon balls were located in it. The outside wall of the Kilitbahir Castle is 4m, the inside wall of it is 18m, the height of the castle is 30m.

The distance of Kilitbahir to Çanakkale is 1200m by seaway. Kanuni had Yellow Tower which is being used as a museum was built as a reinforcement in 1551. It was repaired during 2.Abdülhamit period. These were written in the inscription which is in tower.
