What to Expect
The tour begins with a pick-you up in the morning from your hotel or airport. Head for Cappadocia and start with a hike along the Red and Rose Valley, one of the most breathtaking and mysterious valleys in the region. The valleys, with their fabulous volcanic rock formations, are in the heart of Cappadocia yet they are situated well away from mainstream tourist haunts.
Your walk ends in the Cavusin Cave Village, where you will see a rock castle and Troglodyte dwellings where people lived until the 20th Century. At the Cavusin old town, the church of St. John the Baptist rises on top of the hill. The church was built in the 5th century and it is the biggest cave church of Cappadocia even though it was divided into three rooms in 10th century against danger of collapsing.Most of the frescoes of St. John the Baptist church are faded by smoke but there are still some visible ones. Its cathedral-like proportions are also astounding.
Also admire the Cavusin (Nicephorus Phocas) Church, a barrel-vaulted church, with one nave and three apses that is situated 2.5km from Goreme on the Goreme-Avanos road.
Continue onto the village of Uchisar which is situated at the highest point of Cappadocia, on the Nevsehir-Goreme road, just 5km from Goreme. The top of the Uchisar Castle, provides a magnificent panorama of the surrounding area with Mount Erciyes in the distance. Many rooms hollowed out into the rock are connected to each other with stairs, tunnels, and passages. At the entrances of the rooms, there are millstone doors, just like the ones in the underground settlements, used to control access to these places.
