The Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal, the commander of the 19th Division, stopped the enemies, who were landing, and changed the general situation of the war during the Çanakkale wars. Mustafa Kemal told in his memories that he arrived to Conkbayırı just on time with 57th regiment at the critical hours for this area on 25th April 1915. Colonel Mustafa Kemal gave a historically important speech to his soldiers on 10th August. “Soldiers, there is no doubt that you will defeat the enemies. But don’t hurry. Firstly I would go advance. You will attack altogether when I give a signal with my horsewhip.” The veteran of Çanakkale Mustafa Kemal Atatürk continued to tell what happened later as follows:
“I also ordered to the commanders and officers to get the attention of the soldiers with my signal. Then we went somewhere in front of the attack line and I gave the signal of attack by raising my horsewhip. All the soldiers and officers forgot everything and concentrated on the signal with their whole hearts. As my horsewhip went down, our soldiers with their one foot and bayonets forward and our officers with their guns and swords in their hands started to attack like a lion and like an iron mass. After a second, there was no other voice in the enemy trenches except for: Allah Allah Allah!”
Confederate soldiers were shocked by this attack and were defeated; they started to leave and escape although they were too close to Conkbayırı which they couldn’t capture and had many deaths. During this battle, a shrapnel piece hit Atatürk’s chest. But, he was saved by the watch which his mother gave as a present to him. Because the shrapnel piece hit the watch. So, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who started the Independence Ear after Çanakkale Wars and who would found the Republic was saved for his nation. Later, Atatürk gave this watch as a present to Marshall Liman von Sanders as a memory of the attack. In return, Liman Paşa gave his own watch with the family nobility arming to Atatürk.
The Monument was constructed in 1994.
